QuestionAnswer
what is the "stair-step" line? The zig-zaged line on the periodic table that indicates metalloids (on either side of it)
what is the significance of the stair-step line? they are metalloids/semiconductors, they have some properties of metals and some of nonmetals, and have about a half complete set of electrons on the outer energy level.
what is the "magic" number of electrons in the outer shell? 8 e-
On the periodic table, how are elements with similar properties arranged? In groups/columns/families
what are the properties of alkali metals? group 1, 1 electron in outer shell, very reactive, soft (can be cut w/ knife), silvery, shiny, low density, metals
how do you identify the number of protons in the nucleus of an element with the periodic table? look at the atomic number
what are the properties of noble gases? group 18, 8 electrons in outer shell (except for helium which has 2), nonmetals, unreactive, gases @ room temp, colorless, odorless
what are the properties of halogens? group 17, 7 electrons in outer shell, very reactive (w/ alkali metals), poor conductors of electricity, nonmetal, never uncombined in nature, creates salts
what is the nucleus? the atoms central region, which is made of protons and neutrons (and accounts for the majority of the mass)
what is an electron cloud? a region around the nucleus where electrons are likely to be found
what is an electron? a subatomic particle that has a negative charge
What are the 2 particles found in the nucleus of an atom? proton and neutron
What is the charge of a proton? positive
what is the charge of an electron? negative
what is the charge of a neutron? neutral
What happens as you go across a row on the periodic table? the atomic number+ mass increases, as well as the number of electrons
mass number the total number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus
atomic mass weighted average of masses of all naturally occuring isotopes
atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
