| Alibi | An excuse (truth or lie) regarding where a person was during a crime |

| Deduction | a process of thinking, figuring out a puzzle by pulling the pieces apart and reassembling them |
| Eccentric | Odd, quirky, out of the norm |
| Gaunt | Sunken faced |
| Motive | A reason for an act |
| Pseudonym | A fake name used by a writer for various reasons |

| Irony | Verbal (like sarcasm) dramatic(when the reader knows information that a main character in a story doesn't situational(when a reader is led up to believe something...and then the opposite occurs. Like a bank robber robbing a bank to save someone's life |
| Foreshadowing | A literary device used to give the reader hints to an upcoming, significant event. Usually this carries a negative connotation, but sometimes good events may be foreshadowed too |
| Red herrrings | Misleading clues planted by the author in a plot to throw the reader off track. These are used to draw the reader into the story. |
