| foreshadowing | a literary device used to give the reader hints to an upcoming, significant event. Usually this carries a negative connotation, but sometimes good events may be foreshadowed too |
| red herrings | misleading clues planted by the author in a plot to throw the reader off track. These are used to draw the reader into the story. |
