deduction | a process of thinking, figuring out a puzzle by pulling the pieces apart and reassembling them |
eccentric | odd, quirky, out of the norm |
gaunt | sunken faced |
motive | a reason for an act |
pseudonym | a fake name used by a writer for various reasons |
scrutinize | to study carefully |
sleuth | a detective |
swanky | rich, but old rich, like antiques, etc |
irony | the unexpected |
foreshadowing | a literary device used to give the reader hints to an upcoming, significant event. Usually this carries a negative connotation, but sometimes good events may be foreshadowed too |
red herrings | misleading clues planted by the author in a plot to throw the reader off track. These are used to draw the reader into the story. |
