Dear Mr. Henshaw

QuestionAnswer
How old was Leigh when he began writing to Mr. Henshaw? Second Grade
How did Leigh's opinion of Mr. Henshaw change between second and sixth grade? He loved Mr. Henshaw, but then was mad at Mr. Henshaw because he asked him to answer ten questions as well.
What makes Leigh's life hard? -His parents are divorced. -He lives with his mom and rarely sees his dad. -His dad took his dog Bandit with him. -His mom works a lot and isn't home much. - He doesn't have any friends. - Someone is stealing the food out of his lunch.
What does it mean when Leigh describes himself as medium or average? He doesn't feel noticed.
Why did Leigh's mom say his parents divorced over a truck? His dad was more interested in owning his own truck/business than what was best for his wife.
Why does Leigh walk to school early and slowly? He doesn't want to be home by himself in the morning.
What did Mr. Fridley do that made Leigh feel important? He asked him to help with the flag in the mornings.
Did Mr. Fridley really need Leigh's help with the flag? How do you know? No. He knew Leigh was getting to school early by himself. He asked Leigh to keep him safe and to give him a purpose for getting there early.
What about Leigh's dad bothers him? -He doesn't call. -He calls him "kid" instead of Leigh. - He says "keep your nose clean." -He doesn't visit.
What does Leigh wish he could do with his dad? He wishes his dad would drive him to school in the truck with Bandit.
Who gives better advice to Leigh? His dad or Mr. Fridley? Explain. Mr. Fridley. When Leigh's lunch was getting stolen, Mr. Fridley told Leigh to install an alarm. His dad told him to find out who it was and punch him. Also, Mr. Fridley advised him to think positively in order to make friends.
What good comes from Leigh's lunchbox burglar alarm? He makes a friend, Barry and the other kids notice him and want him to make alarms for them.
When Leigh's dad sent him a coat for Christmas, his mom was smiling while he was trying it on. Why do you think she is happy, if she's upset with his dad? She is happy because the gift has made Leigh happy.
Do you think Mr. Henshaw's advice to write in a diary was good? Explain Yes. It forced Leigh to think about his feelings and let them out, rather than bottling up his anger and loneliness.
What two pieces of information did Leigh find out on a call to his dad that made him say he hated him? -His dad lost Bandit. -His dad was seeing another woman, who had a son.
How did the butterfly garden make Leigh feel? He felt good all over and it gave him an idea for writing.
Why would insensitive be a good word to describe Leigh's dad's reaction to losing Bandit? He sent Leigh $20 and told him to buy ice cream. Ice cream isn't going to take a way the grief of losing a pet.
How did Leigh feel when Angela Badger remembered which story was his and complimented it? It made him feel like a real author and proud.
How did Angela Badger describe Mr. Henshaw? What does this mean? She said he had a wicked twinkle in his eye. This means he's mischievous and fun- not wicked.
What did Leigh's dad do regarding the loss of Bandit that showed he cared and was trying to make it up to Leigh? Everyday he asked on the CB radio about Bandit until he found him.
Why did Leigh's dad come back to visit? Did the visit go as he had hoped? He came back to ask his mom to get back together. No, his mom did not take him back.
Why did Leigh let his dad keep Bandit? He thought his dad needed Bandit more than he did.
Beverly Cleary ends the story with Leigh saying, "I felt sad and a whole lot better at the same time." How is this possible? Sad because his parents are still divorced. His dad and Bandit are gone again. Better because he knows his dad loves him and has learned how to express his feelings and cope.
