Box & Whisker Plots

Tools to help you remember box and whisker plot terms

TermDefinition
Lower Extreme This is the smallest value in the data set when ordered from least to greatest; also called the minimum.
Upper Extreme This is the largest value in the data set when ordered from least to greatest; also called the maximum.
Lower Quartile This is the middle number of the lower half of the data set when ordered from least to greatest; also called Quartile 1 (Q1).
Upper Quartile This is the middle number of the upper half of the data setwhen ordered from least to greatest; also called Quartile 3 (Q3).
Median The middle number in the data set when ordered from least to greatest.
The Five Number Summary This is the name for the five special values used to summarize data in a box and whisker plot. These are represented by dots on the box plot.
Box Plot Also known as a Box and Whisker Plot
Interquartile Range (IQR) This is the difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile; Q3 - Q1. This should always be a positive number.
