Box & Whisker Plots
Tools to help you remember box and whisker plot terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lower Extreme | This is the smallest value in the data set when ordered from least to greatest; also called the minimum. |
| Upper Extreme | This is the largest value in the data set when ordered from least to greatest; also called the maximum. |
| Lower Quartile | This is the middle number of the lower half of the data set when ordered from least to greatest; also called Quartile 1 (Q1). |
| Upper Quartile | This is the middle number of the upper half of the data setwhen ordered from least to greatest; also called Quartile 3 (Q3). |
| Median | The middle number in the data set when ordered from least to greatest. |
| The Five Number Summary | This is the name for the five special values used to summarize data in a box and whisker plot. These are represented by dots on the box plot. |
| Box Plot | Also known as a Box and Whisker Plot |
| Interquartile Range (IQR) | This is the difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile; Q3 - Q1. This should always be a positive number. |
