Unit 6 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Transformation A change in the position, shape, or size of a figure.
Translation A transformation that moves each point of a figure the same distance and in the same direction.
Image The figure you get after a transformation.
Reflection A transformation that flips a figure over a line.
Line of Reflection The line across which a figure is reflected.
Reflectional Symmetry When a figure can be reflected over a line so that it's image matches the original figure.
Line of Symmetry Divides a figure into mirror images.
Rotation A transformation that turns a figure about a fixed point.
Center of Rotation A fixed point about which a figure rotates.
Angle of Rotation The number of degrees a figure rotates.
Rotational Symmetry If a figure can be rotated 180 degrees or less and exactly match it's original figure.
Dilation A transformation in which a figure and it's image are similar.
Scale Factor The ratio of the dimension of the new image to the dimension of the original figure in a dilation.
Enlargement A dilation with a scale factor greater than 1.
Reduction A dilation with a scale factor less than 1.
