| Term | Definition |

| Hard Water | water that does not form a lather easily with soap |
| Soft Water | water that forms a lather easily with soap |
| Mixture | Two or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined |
| Pure | When a substance or mixture is not contaminated or polluted by an unwanted source |
| Impure | when a substance or mixture has been polluted or contaminated by another unwanted source |
| Filtration | separation of an insoluble solid from liquid or gas |
| filtrate | The liquid that is collected after passing through a filter |
| Residue | The insoluble solid left in the filter after filtration |
| permeable | Having pores that allow gases or liquids to pass through a membrane |
| Distillation | The process in which a liquid is boiled and its vapour is condensed and collected |
| Evaporation | The changing of a liquid to gas when the surface of the liquid is heated |
| Miscible | Have two liquids mix evenly with each other |
| Residue | the solute that is left after solvent has been removed from a solution by distillation or evaporation |
| Distillate | the liquid that has been condensed from a vapour and is collected from the condenser |
| Absorption | The attraction of a substance to the surface layer of another substance |
| Capillary Action | The process of water particles sticking to each other and to the walls of narrow tubes which causes water top rise in the tubes |
| Chromotography | The separation of dissolved substances in a solution by their attraction to the solvent |
