Unit 1 - Short Story Vocabulary

| narrative | tells a story or describes a sequence of events. |
| characterization | The act of creating characters |
| setting | the time and place where the story takes place |
| conflict | a struggle between characters or opposing forces |
| internal conflict | occurs when a character struggles with his or her own needs, desires, or emotions |
| external conflict | occurs when a character struggles with an outside force, such as another character or something in nature |
| dialogue | is conversation between people. In a story, it is the words that characters say. |
| connotation | refers to the suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word. |
| denotation | refers to the literal meaning of a word. |
| simile | compares two unlike things using words such as like or as. His music is like a fast trip on a roller coaster. |
| metaphor | A metaphor compares two unlike things without using the words like or as. Often a form of to be is used. Her music is a trip to the streets of Memphis |
| sensory language | refers to words that appeal to the five senses. Writers use sensory language to help readers create mental images of the characters and story details. |
| personal narrative | a story based on one’s own life and told in the first person. |
| analyze | separate something into parts and study how the parts are related. |
| sequence | to put things in an order; a set of events that follows one after another in a sequential or orderly presentation of steps or events. |
| cause-effect | describes a relationship in which an action/event will produce or cause a certain response or effect in the form of another event. It is important to show that a specific effect is directly related to a cause. Ex. Driving over sharp object=flat tire |
| transitions | use transitions to connect ideas, you are helping to create coherence. |
| coherence | is the clear and orderly presentation of ideas in your writing and speaking. |
| short story | a fictional narrative that presents a sequence of events, or plot, that include a conflict |
