Ch B Chemistry

Discovering Atomos Lessons 5 and 6

QuestionAnswer
valence electrons an electron found in the outermost (usually incompletely-filed) orbital of an atom; determine how an element combines with other elements
molecules a group of two or more atoms linked by a chemical bond; the small independent unit of a compound
covalent bonding a chemical bond between two (generally similar) elements; occurs when one atom shares electron(s) with another atom, creating a bond between the two atoms as they both attract the shared electron
ionic bond a chemical bond between two (general dissimilar) elements; occurs when one atom gives electrons to the other atom, making both atoms into ions that bond with each other
molecular mass the combined masses of each atom in a molecule
Lewis structures electron dot diagrams developed by Gilbert Newton Lewis in the early 1900s to illustrate valence electrons in elements; used to show the changes in electron orbital structures caused by chemical bonding
mole a group of atoms or molecules that total 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd power; a convenient conversion unit for chemistry calculations
compound two or more elements combined chemically; has different chemical properties than those of its individual elements, and it can only be separated by chemical means
anion an atom that has gained an electron; have more electrons than protons, giving them a negative charge
cation an atom that has lost an electron; have more protons than electrons, giving them a positive charge

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
