Words About Dictionaries

TermDefinition
abridged Shortened, usually in reference to a written or spoken work.
browse a. to look over reading material, sampling different parts. b. To look at in a leisurely and casual manner.
citation a. A reference to or a quotation from an authority. b. An official reward for honorable behavior. c. An official order stating that one must appear in court.
compendium a. A short but complete written story. b. A collection that includes a variety of written works.
entry a. In a reference book, a subject or word and information about it. b. The means or place by which to come in.
etymology The origin and history of a word.
gazetteer A dictionary of geographical places, including names and information.
homonym A word having the same pronunciation as another word but a different meaning from that word.
lexicon a. A dictionary b. The vocabulary of a particular subject or group.
phonetics The study of the sounds of a language.
