jostle v. to bump, shove, brush against The line at the ice cream truck was so long that I got jostled out of the line before I could even get my ice cream.
laggard n. a person who moves slowly or falls behind All of us were able to make the bus just in time, but the laggard didn't make it. adj. falling behind. The boy was so laggard he missed the bus.
plaudits n. pl. enthusiastic praise or approval When the team made the winning goal, the plaudits from the crowd were unbelievable.
preclude v. to make impossible Whoever answers this question wrong will preclude themselves from continuing into the final round.
revert v. to return or go back As he was building his machine, he realized he'd made an error and had to revert back to the beginning.
rubble n. ruins After the hurricane was over, they went to go see their house, but it was just rubble.
servile adj. behaving like a slave Abraham Lincoln helped free African Americans from their servile ways.
vigil n. a watch, especially at night Last year when I had the flu, my mother kept a vigil watch on me to make sure I was okay.
wrangle n. a noisy quarrel The siblings got into such a wrangle that even there mother couldn't stop them. v. to argue in a noisy, angry way When it's time for chores, the siblings are always wrangling about whose turn it is to clean the dishes.
