What are the types of relationships b/w Executive & Legislative? 1) Presidential form of government (USA)- Executive & Legislative are seperate but co-equal. 2) Parliamentary form of government (UK)- Executive branch is apart of the legislative branch, not seperated roles.
What is social contract theory? Free ment combine to make a government, agree to give up power & freedom (subject themselves to laws and not live on their own), agree "consent" to be ruled. Theoretical but outlines the obligations b/w man and govt.
Thoman Hobbes believed (1651 Leviathan) There needs to be a sovereign to preserve order.
John Locke (stongely influenced by Thomas Jefferson) Wrote 2 Treatise (essays) on govt in 1689. 10 The only legti govt is formed by consent of the governed. 2) Man has natural inalienable rights, Life, Libery, & Property. 3) If a govt abuses public trust the people are justified in revolt.
What is the importance of property? Those with property have something to lose. This is why property used to be required during the time of John Locke b/c the government would make imortant decisions to protect our property.
J.J. Roussean believed.. 1761 Regarding the Social Contract,man must submit to the will of the magority, the General will is never wrong. "Man must be forced to be free!" (Following the General will is true freedom)

The Magna Carta King John I 1251 Runny Meade, Wales, The 1st document to limit the King's Power. Barren's wanted traditional rights recognized. 1st part was created by Parliament to the king. R: Disapears for 50 years, reappears w/ additional things.
What was included in the Magna Carta? Trial by jury, due process of law (day in court, confront accuser), No arbitrary seizure of life or property, the monarch must obey the law
The Petition of Right Charles I, 30 years war against French, he needs $$$. Parliament forces him to sighn Pet. of Rights which adds to the Magna Carta.. No martial law, No Quartering of soldiers, No taxation w/o representation(Parliament must approve of tax)

Tea tax 1773 3 British Each company arrive in Boston, Sam Adams + dress as Indians & throw tea overboard
Coercive Act 1774 Suspended all town meeting & quartered soldiers
1st contintental congress All but Georgia discussed response and drafted the Dec. of Rights & Grievences
Declaration of Rights & Grievances since we wre not represented at Parliament, we defered to our own colonial legislature
2nd Continental Congress (may 1775)The first acting government of the United states!!!!!!
Lexington & Concord war breaks out
Richard Henry Lee (VA) put forth a resolution "colonies should be free & independent states"
Declaration of Independence 7/4/1776 Served 3 purposes. 1) New Theory of Govt. 2) Reasons for Seperation. 3) Declaration of War [no mention of slavery or women!]
