Flexible Fluid Lines

Fluid Line Terms

TermDefinition
Flexible Hose Used in aircraft fluid systems to connect moving parts with stationary parts.
Flexible Hose Used in aircraft fluid systems in locations subject to vibration.
Pure Rubber What Material is never used in the construction of flexible fluid lines.
Buna-N Synthetic rubber compound which has excellent resistance to petroleum products.
Neoprene Synthetic rubber compound which has an acetylene base. Its resistance to petroleum products is not as good as Buna-N
Butyl Synthetic rubber compound made from petroleum raw materials use with phosphate ester base hydraulic fluid (Skydrol).
Low pressure Type of Hose below 250 psi. Fabric braid reinforcement
Medium pressure Type of Hose up to 3,000 psi. One wire braid reinforcement. Smaller sizes carry up to 3,000 psi. Larger sizes carry pressure up to 1,500 psi
High Pressure Type of Hose all sizes up to 3,000 psi operating pressures.
9 inches markings are in contrasting colored letters and numerals which indicate the natural lay (no twist) of the hose and are repeated at intervals of not more than:
Lay lines Hose marking used to indicate if a hose is twisted.
Skydrol Hose suitable for use with phosphate ester base hydraulic fluid will be marked:
Teflon™ DuPont trade name for tetrafluoroethylene resin.
Teflon™ Hose material compatible with nearly every substance or agent used.
pre-set Name for a preformed hose assembly with a support wire
Cold-Flow the deep, permanent impressions in the hose produced by the pressure of hose clamps or supports.
Swaged If a failure occurs in a flexible hose equipped with these end fittings, the entire assembly must be replaced.
Inside Diameter Used to determine flexible hose size.
hydraulic oil or water Hydraulic, fuel, and oil lines are generally tested using:
dry, oil-free air or nitrogen Air or instrument lines are tested with:
1.5 system pressure Hose are tested to:
5 to 8 percent of its total length When installing flexible hose, provide slack or bend in the hose line from:
length When pressurized, flexible hose contracts in
diameter When pressurized, flexible hose expands in
24 inches Hose must be supported at least every:
Teflon™-cushioned clamp Type of clamp is used in areas where the deteriorating effect of Skydrol, hydraulic fluid, or fuel is expected.
Bonded Type of clamp used to secure metal hydraulic, fuel, or oil lines in place.
