What happened from May 2, 1808- 1814? The Spanish War of Independence
Who was the head of the French government in Spain? Joseph I (José Bonaparte)
What did the Constitution of Cádiz, 1812, define? It limited the power of the monarchy and divided the power into three branches.
What does succession (sucesión) mean? The action of inheriting (heredar) a title or office
Who supported Isabel II? The Liberals
Who supported Isabel II's uncle, the brother of Fernando VII? The Carlists
What were the Carlist Wars? Conflicts about the succession, starting in 1833
What is one main reason Spain lost many of its colonies? The people (colonists) wanted more freedom (libertad) and rights (derechos)
What is a colony? A country or area that is under the control of another country
What is an absolute monarchy? The monarch (king, queen) has got all the power
What is caciquismo? A political system with rich, controlling bosses, leaders
