QuestionAnswer
What type of appliances are covered under EPA Type III certification? Low-pressure appliances such as chillers that use refrigerants like R-11, R-123, or R-113.
Why must low-pressure appliances be leak-tested at atmospheric pressure instead of a vacuum? Because air and moisture can be drawn into the system under a vacuum, making leak detection inaccurate.
What is the required recovery level if the recovery machine was manufactured before November 15, 1993? 25 mm Hg absolute.
What is the required recovery level for low-pressure appliances when using a recovery machine manufactured after November 15, 1993? 25 mm Hg absolute.
Why is water a major concern in low-pressure refrigeration systems? Water can freeze in the evaporator and cause corrosion and reduced system efficiency.
What refrigerant property allows low-pressure systems to operate efficiently at low temperatures? Low boiling point under low pressure
Where is the purge unit typically located on a low-pressure chiller? At the highest point of the system where non-condensables collect.
What should be done with refrigerant removed from a purge unit? It must be recovered and not vented to the atmosphere.
Why should a pressure relief device on a low-pressure appliance never be capped or plugged? Because it could cause excessive pressure buildup and lead to equipment damage or explosion.
What is the primary source of non-condensables in low-pressure refrigeration systems? Air leaks and improper evacuation procedures.
