| Term | Definition |

| function | a relationship or expression involving one or more variables. |
| relation | the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected; a thing's effect on or relevance to another. |
| independent variable | a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. |
| dependent variable | a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another. |
| domain | a specified sphere of activity or knowledge. |
| range | the area of variation between upper and lower limits on a particular scale. |
| slope | a surface of which one end or side is at a higher level than another; a rising or falling surface. |
| y-intercept | In the equation of a straight line (when the equation is written as "y = mx + b"), the slope is the number "m" that is multiplied on the x, and "b" is the y-intercept (that is, the point where the line crosses the vertical y-axis). |
| linear equation | an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph. |
