density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume |
liquid | a state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape |
solid | a state of matter that has a definite shape and volume. |
gas | a state of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape |
chemical change | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into an entirely new substance with different properties |
physical change | a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
melting | the change of state in which a solid becomes a liquid |
volume | the amount of space an object takes up |
mass | the amount of matter in an object |
matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
weight | the amount of gravitational force exerted on an object |
physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change |
chemical property | a property of matter that describes its ability to participate in chemical reactions |
evaporation | the change of state in which a liquid becomes a gas |
freezing | the change of state in which a liquid becomes a solid |
deposition | the change of state in which a gas becomes a solid |
sublimation | the change of state in which a solid becomes a gas |
condensation | the change in state in which a gas becomes a liquid |
element | a pure substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simper substances |
metal | an element that is shiny and conducts heat and electricity well |
nonmetal | an element that does not conduct heat or electricity well |
metalloid | an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals |
periodic table of the elements | a chart showing the arrangement of elements based on a repeating pattern of their chemical properties |
proton | a positively charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom |
electron | a negatively charged subatomic particle orbiting the nucleus |
neutron | a subatomic particle in the nucleus that has a neutral charge |
electron cloud | the area around the nucleus where electrons quickly orbit |
compound | a substance made of two or more elements |
molecule | a group of atoms bonded together |
atom | the smallest unit of an element |
