Discovering Atomos Lesson 3

QuestionAnswer
element a specific form of matter composed of only one type of atom, classified by the number of protons in an atom of that element
Periodic Table of the Elements a system of organization for the elements, with elements positioned based on their atomic number and type
atomic number the number of protons in an atom
periods a row in the Periodic Table; determined by the highest energy level where electrons can be found in an atom of taht elmenet
groups the name for a column in the Periodic Table of Elements, generally divided based on the number of valence electrons in an atom of the element
metals the most abundant of the three broad categories into which elements are classified based on their properties; are good conductors of electricity, can be molded or stretched without breaking
non-metals one of the three broad categories into which elements are classified based on their properties; in solid form, do not gleam, are poor conductors, and tend to be fragile
metalloids one of three broad categories of the Periodic Table; also called semimetals or semiconductors; sometimes have a metallic gleam, but are more fragile; can conduct heat and electricity, but not as well as metals.
atomic mass the total average number of protons and neutrons in an atom
isotope a variation of an element based on the number of neturons in its nucleus
