| patrilocality | newly married couple live near or with the husband's family |
| homogamy | marriage between people with similar social characteristics |
| kinship | network of people who are related by marriage, birth or adoption. |
| bilocality | newly married couple choose whether they will live near the husband's or wife's parents |
| family of orientation | nuclear family into which a person is born |
| bilateral descent | kinship is traced through both parents and property, can be inherited from either side. |
| polygamy | marriage with multiple partners |
| egalitarian | authority is shared by both the mother and father |
| blended family | one or both of the marriage partners bring children from their previous marriage |
| polyandry | a woman is permitted to marry more than one male at a time. |
| family | group of people who are related by marriage, blood or adoption and who live together and share economic resources |
| extended family | three or more generations of family sharing a home. |
| patrilineal descent | trace kinship through the father's family; property is passed from mother to daughter |
| heterogamy | marriage between individuals who have different social characteristics. |
| cohabitation | living together without being married |
