patrilocality newly married couple live near or with the husband's family
homogamy marriage between people with similar social characteristics
kinship network of people who are related by marriage, birth or adoption.
bilocality newly married couple choose whether they will live near the husband's or wife's parents
family of orientation nuclear family into which a person is born
bilateral descent kinship is traced through both parents and property, can be inherited from either side.
polygamy marriage with multiple partners
egalitarian authority is shared by both the mother and father
blended family one or both of the marriage partners bring children from their previous marriage
polyandry a woman is permitted to marry more than one male at a time.
family group of people who are related by marriage, blood or adoption and who live together and share economic resources
extended family three or more generations of family sharing a home.
patrilineal descent trace kinship through the father's family; property is passed from mother to daughter
heterogamy marriage between individuals who have different social characteristics.
cohabitation living together without being married
