Authors Craft Term

Characterization | The development of a character within a story-when the author id clearly developing a character by describing at length the characters thoughts, dialogue , or interactions with othercharacters |
theme | The lesson or message or moral of the story ; what message or lesson is the author trying to communicate to his or her readers? |
point of veiw | The perspective from which the story is being told. This is a example of authors craft when the author uses an unique point of view to tell the story or changes the point of view in the story |
Flashback | A jump back i time during the story, often done to provide the reader with important background information about a character or past event. |
foreshadowing | a warning or indication of a future event in the story. |
repetition | repeating of a words or phrases throughout the text. The repetition needs to happen many times to emphasize and important message. |
Tone or mood | The tone and feeling that the writer creates for the reader. Authors will often establish the mood based upon the actions and feelings of the character in the story. |
simile | comparisons between two unlike things using like or as . |
metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things. |
symbolism | An object or action that means something more than its literal meaning. |
alliteration | An author uses the same letter or sound to begin each word in a string of words. |
onomatopoeia | when a word sounds like what it means. |
allusion | a figure of speech that makes reference to a well-known person event or place. |
hyperbole | an exaggerated comment or line |
personification | This occurs when an author gives animals, objects ideas or actions, the qualities of humans |
imaginary | The use of descriptive language to create powerful images in the readers mind. Often the author describes one of the five scenes to help create the image. |
