| Term | Definition |

| legislature | law-making body elected by the people |
| Prime Minister | head of government in a Parliamentary democracy- makes day-to-day decisions and head of military- chosen by leading political party in Parliament |
| President | head of government and head of state in a presidential democracy- makes day-to-day decisions, head of military, and symbol for the country |
| Monarch | Head of State in a Parliamentary Democracy- serves as the symbol for the country, does NOT make day-to-day decisions for the country |
| autocracy | all of the power is held by one person with unlimited authority |
| dictator | the ruler in an autocracy |
| democracy | a nation's citizens get to vote for their leaders |
| Canada's government | a Parliamentary Democracy |
| Brazil's government | a Presidential Democracy; 18-70 are REQUIRED to vote |
| Mexico's government | a Presidential Democracy |
| Cuba's government | an autocracy; citizens vote for legislators, but all names on the ballot are members of the Communist party! |
