The Odyssey begins with an Invocation to the Muse. What is the purpose of this section? Homer is praying to the god of literature (Muse) for help to tell the story.

Odysseus and his men land on the coastline of the Lotus Eaters to take on water. Why does he send 3 men ashore? Odysseus sent 3 men to scout the land to ensure that the other men would be safe <--- leadership
What is the danger to Odysseus and his men in the Land of the Lotus Eaters? The lotus flower itself, because it causes the men to have amnesia.
How does Odysseus rescue his men from this danger? Odysseus ties them to the ship to ensure no man is left behind <------leadership
What is the Cyclops attitude toward law? The Cyclops have a negative attitude towards laws and don't think they need them
Against his men;s advice, Odysseus refuses to leave before the Cyclops returns to the cave. What reason does Odysseus give for not leaving? Odysseus wants to see what a Cyclops really is.
One of the laws of ancient Greek society is courtesy to strangers. What does Polyphemus do to defy this law? Polyphemus traps them in the cave with a large rock.
Why does Odysseus not kill the Cyclops when he is asleep? Odysseus needs the Cyclops to move the rock because Odysseus didn't have enough horsepower with his few men
What does Odysseus do the following day to prepare for the Cyclop's return to the cave He creates a weapon out of a wooden pole from an olive tree laying on the cave floor.
What do Odysseus and his men do to Polyphemus? They get him drunk using Odysseus' liquor and stabs him in the eye with the stake
Why don't the other Cyclops help Polyphemus? Odysseus tells Polyphemus his name is Nohbdy and when the Cyclops asked what happened he said " Nohbdy did it."
What trick does Odysseus use to free his men and himself from the cave? Odysseus and his men hid under the belly of the Cyclops's rams so they Cyclops couldn't fell them
When he is safely at sea, Odysseus boasts of his true identity. What does Polyphemus ask Poseidon, the god of the sea, to do? Polyphemus asks Poseidon to make sure either Odysseus never returns home or returns home alone under a strange sail.
From the episode of the Cyclops, give 3 examples of Odysseus' cleverness as a leader? 1) Says his name is Nohbdy 2) Doesn't immediately kill Polyphemus 3) Hides under the rams
Who is Aeolus? He is the King of the winds
What happens to Odysseus on the islands of Aeolus? Aeolus bags up the winds that they don't need to return home except the west wind
What is Laestrygonians? It is a race of cannibals
What happened to Odysseus on the island of Laestrygonians? The Laestrygonians destroy all of Odysseus' ships except for one
Who is Circe? Enchantress who helped Odysseus and turns half of his men into swine
What happened to Odysseus' men on the island of Circe? Half of his men get turned to swine, but Odysseus is protected by a magic herb
What is the "land of Death"? Where Hades lives basically Hell
Who is Tiresias? The blind prophet
According to Tiresias, what will Odysseus find when he returns home? He will find his home in trouble: insolent men eating his livestock and courting his lady
What plan does Odysseus devise that will enable him to listen to the song of the Sirens yet remain unharmed by them? He fills his men's ears with beeswax and leaves his own ears unplugged, He tells his crew to tie him to the ship showing trust in his crew
How does Odysseus protect his men from the danger of the Siren's song? He fills beeswax in his men's ears
When he hears the Siren's song, what does Odysseus tell his crew to do? Odysseus tells them to untie him by jerking his eybrows
How do his men respond to this command? Two men hold him still and untie him when they were out danger
Circe has warned Odysseus about Scylla and Charybdis. What are they/ Scylla is a sea monster of gray rock with 6 heads Charybdis is a dangerous whirlpool
Odysseus follows Circe's advice in order to lose the fewest men. What is his plan? Odysseus chooses to sail pass Scylla instead of Charybdis risking a few men instead of his entire ship.
To what does Odysseus compare the way Scylla snatched his 6 men from their boat? He compares it to fishermen pulling helpless fish out of the water
Where do Odysseus and his crew seek shelter from the storm which Zeus cause? a sea cave
What warning does Odysseus give his men? Odysseus tells them not to kill Helios' cows
How long were Odysseus and his men stranded on the island of Helios' cows? 1 month
What does Eurylochus tell the men? He tells them to kill the cattle because it would keep them from starving, but Odysseus refuses
What "queer signs" did the gods make appear? Cow hides began to crawl and beef both raw and roasted began to make sounds
How long were Odysseus' men able to feast on the slain cattle? 1 day
How does Zeus punish Odysseus' men for what they did? He destroys their last ship
Odysseus survives the storm by riding on a mast and keel that he lashed together. When this "raft" is swallowed by Charybdis, what does Odysseus do to survive? He clings to a fig tree
