absolute value the distance a rational number is from zero; always positive
exponent a form of a number that tells how many times a number is multiplied by itself
term 6x, -5, y
evaluate Finding a value of an expression or equation
reciprocal -5/3 -> -3/5 9 -> 1/9
constant a value that is not affected by a variable in an expression or equation
coefficient The number in front of a variable (multiplied with the variable)
like terms 3y, 4y; 2.5, 8/9, 4; 2xy, 5xy
linear expression 4x + 5 ; 16 - ⅗x; -7x + 1 ⅔
inverse expressions Math operations that “undo” each other
equation A number sentence with an equal sign to show both sides are equal
