Soil

This will help students review for a test on soil.

3 layers of soil topsoil, subsoil, bedrock
humus a part of soil that is made up of decayed materials
humus description dark, soft, crumbly
sand description large grains, feels gritty, water leaves it quickly
clay description becomes sticky when wet but dries in hard clumps
silt description pieces are smaller than sand and feels like powder
What is soil made of? bacteria, fungi, worms, plant material, pieces of rock
loam mixture of soil with large and small grains with lots of humus in it; good for planting
