Ocean Water

salinity, ocean floor, waves, currents, tides

QuestionAnswer
What is the most abundant salt in ocean water? Sodium Chloride
How does salinity change with temperature? Salinity increases with increasing temperature (Remember: Evaporation leaves salt behind)
What location has the lowest salinity? Areas where freshwater is added, such as rivers
How does temperature and pressure change with depth? The deeper into the ocean, temperature DECREASES but pressure INCREASES
How does temperature affect the density of ocean water? Cold, Saltwater is more dense than Warm, Freshwater or Warm Saltwater
Which feature on the ocean floor has the most pressure? A trench has the most pressure because it is very deep
What is the difference between a surface current and a deep current? Surface currents are caused by wind and Deep currents are caused by differences in density
Where do HIGH tides occur? High tides occur on the sides of the Earth where the moon is pulling the water and on the opposite side - Tidal Bulge (Remember: Two HIGH tides occur daily)
How does salinity influence density? As salinity increases, density increases
Where does the salt in ocean water come from? Underwater volcanoes, Hydrothermal vents, Acid rain
What has the most influence on tides? Gravitational pull of the moon
What is the only cause of waves? Wind
What can influence the height of a wave? Strength of the wind, Distance the wind blows, Length of time the wind is blowing
Water Cycle Review: What is infiltration? Surface water provided by Precipitation seeps into the soil and is stored as groundwater
Water Cycle Review: How does the temperature changes influence Evaporation and Condensation? Evaporation-Temperature INCREASES; Condensation-Temperature DECREASES
