Which of the following do you think best represents the spirit of the Age of Faith-Church reform, the Crusades, or the Gothic cathedrals? Church reform, because of bad Church practices; the Crusades, because they were faith in action; cathedrals, because they represented the City of God.
What were the three main causes of the need to reform the Church? -many village priests married and had families. such marriages were against church rulings -bishops sold positions in the church (SIMONY) -using lay investiture, kings appointed church bishops.
Which crusade was the only successful one? The First Crusade.
How did the goals of the crusades change over the years? The goals of the crusades had economic, social and political goals as well as religious motives. They ended up being for land and more control.
How did the crusades change the history of Europe? The Crusades weakened feudalism and increased trade between Europe and the Middle East. They also created tension between Christians and Muslims.
How did medieval society change between 1000 and 1500? Agriculture, trade, and finance made significant advances. Towns and cities grew. Cultural interaction with the Muslim and Byzantine worlds increased the growth of learning and the birth of universities.
How were Muslim scholars linked to the revival of learning in Europe? Christian scholars from Europe began visiting Muslim libraries in Spain. Books began to be translated into Latin for people in Europe to read.
In what ways did burghers expand their freedom from landlords? They organized themselves and demanded privileges. These included freedom from certain kinds of tolls and the right to govern the town. They sometimes took theses rights by force.
How did guilds influence business practices in medieval towns? They controlled the number of goods being traded and to kept prices up. they provided security in trading and reduced losses. Guilds set standards for utility of work, wages, and working conditions.
What was the effect of the development of towns on the feudal system? People weren't content with life in feudal towns and many serfs.
Which of the steps toward democratic government are similar to U.S. practices? Common Law, Formation of Legislation, and Elections.
What two legal practices date back to Henry II? Juries and common law.
What are some basic rights guaranteed by the Magna Carta? Everyone will pay taxes, everyone gets a trial by jury, and protection of the law.
Why did Philip II call the Estates-General together? To win wider support against the pope.
Compare the way in which England and France began developing as nations? England - use of jury in English courts, Magna Carta, model parliament France - Hugh Capet increases the territory of France, creates a French appeals court, third estate to the estates-general
Which event had some economic effects? Split in church, plague, and the 100 years' war
what was the great schism? East–West Schism, between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, beginning in 1054. Western Schism, a split within the Roman Catholic Church that lasted from 1378 to 1417.
what were three effects of the bubonic plague? death, decline in population, decline in towns.
what impact did joan of arc have on the hundred year's war? Joan felt empowered by god to rescue france from its english conquerers. Joan lead the french army into battle at a fort city near Orleans.
What problems did the Hundred Years' war survivors face after the bubonic plague? trade, prices, wages, revolts, and or being driven from their homes or massacred.
