| Thomas Paine | He wrote the book Common Sense to convince colonials of the need to support independence from Britain |
| Thomas Jefferson | Noted author of the Declaration of Independence (celebrated July 4, 1776); He is an anti-federalist and will later be the 3rd President of the US |
| Declaration of Independence | Document, written by Thomas Jefferson, laying out natural rights of people and declaring the colonies independent from Great Britain; THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT ANY FORM OF A CONSTITUTION |
| Rule of law | The idea that nobody is above the law; the law applies equally to all classes of people |
| John Locke | Enlightenment philosopher who wrote about natural rights and governing (popular sovereignty and social contract). Jefferson used many of his ideas in the Declaration of Independence. |
| Social contract | John Locke’s idea that people have to give up some of their natural born freedoms in order for society to be governed without chaos...we can’t just shoot people for taking our property |
| Popular sovereignty | Another idea of John Locke that the government should get its power from the consent of the governed (permission of the people); we do this through elections |
| Natural rights | Rights all people should be born with |
| Salutary Neglect | The idea that colonies should be allowed to govern themselves under the watchful eye of the parent colony (Great Britain); This is like going off to college, technically you are still under your parents but you are getting a taste of independence. |
| Article of Confederation | America’s first attempt at writing a constitution to govern our new country after independence from Britain. The Articles generally gave most power to state governments instead of federal (No federal military, money, judicial system, etc.) |
| Daniel Shays’s rebellion | A Massachusetts farmer who rebelled against the state of Massachusetts protesting unfair taxes. The rebellion highlighted the weaknesses of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation (no military) |
| Iroquois Constitution | The Iroquois are a Native American tribe whose constitution influenced the design of our separation of powers (3 branches of gov’t) used on our U.S. Constitution |
