| samurai | warrior knights. waged battle for control of land. Challenge the power of the Helen court |
| feudalism | a system of government which allowed local lords to rule the great land. Thoes lords were bound to higher lords and to the emperor by ties of loyality |
| shogun | chreif general of an army of samurai regarded most powerful samurai |
| Buddhism | religion in japan. gave japan new set of beliefs. (cycle of birth and rebirth). Taught people could get closer to salvation through meditation. |
| Daimyo | a great samurai that was required to spend every other year in Edo, present day Tokyo. For good behavior purposes Daimyo had to leave their wives and children in Edo as permanent hostages. |
| Shinto | has neither sacred writings nor an organized set of beliefs. Shinto shared beliefs in the gods encouraged a sense of closeness among people and united all of japan. Shinto did not answer questions about life after death |
| Treaty of Kanagawa | Treaty signed with united states granting american ships to stop at two Japanese ports for supplies. Also, gave US the rights to send diplomatic representative to Japan |
| Meiji Restoration | 15 year old emperor moved from Kyoto to Tokyo and established his shogun and called his reign Meiji. Motivation was "enrich the country, strengthen military". Meiji sent reformers to the US to study government, industry, and military. |
| isolationism | or a country to be cut off from contacting foreigners outside country. Foreigners are not allowed to enter. In japan any Japanese who left could not return . The only contact permitted with the outside world in this period of Japan was with two ships year |
