Short Story Elements

QuestionAnswer
Series of related events that are centered around a conflict. PLOT
Struggle between opposing forces CONFLICT
Conflict between a character and an outside force, such as another character, nature, society, or fate. EXTERNAL CONFLICT
Conflict that takes place within the mind of a character. INTERNAL CONFLICT
The time and place of the story’s action. SETTING
The actors in the story’s plot. CHARACTERS
The main character. PROTAGONIST
Is in conflict with the main character. ANTAGONIST
Character that does not change. STATIC
Character that changes in important ways as a result of the story’s action. DYNAMIC
Characters that have only 1 or 2 personality traits. FLAT
Complex; have many different traits. ROUND
The relationship of the narrator to the story. POINT OF VIEW
The narrator is a character in the story. 1st PERSON
Narrator reveals the thoughtS of only one character. 3rd PERSON LIMITED
Narrator reveals the thoughts of all the characters. 3rd PERSON OMNISCIENT
Central idea or message of a story THEME
Theme that is directly presented in a story. STATED THEME
Theme that must be inferred by considering all the elements of a story. IMPLIED THEME
