| arithmetic operations | multiplication, division, adding, subtraction |
| variable | a letter that represents a number |
| constant | a symbol which always stands for the same number |
| substituting | replacing a variable with a constant |
| terms | numbers that are added and subtracted |
| factors | numbers that are multiplied together |
| equation | a sentence which says that one expression is equal to another expression |
| left member | the expression on the left side |
| right member | the expression on the right side |
| solution | a number you can substitute for the variable that makes the sentence true |
| transform | to do the same operation to each member of the equation |
