Ratios, Rates, & Percents Unit Vocabulary

TermDefinition
coordinate plane a plane formed by a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, that intersects a vertical number line, called the y-axis
equivalent describes expressions or quantities that have the same value
ordered pair a pair of numbers describing the location of a point on the coordinate plane
percent a part-to-whole ratio that compares an amount to 100
rate a ratio of two quantities with different units
ratio a comparison of two numbers or quantities
unit rate a ratio of measurements in which the second measurement (or denominator) is 1 unit
proportion an equation showing that two ratios are equivalent; missing values can be found with cross multiplying and solving an equation
