Workplace Rights and Laws

TermDefinition
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Passed by federal government requiring minimum wage, workweek, and child labor laws.
Minimum Wage the lowest amount you can be paid
Work week 40 hours
Child Labor Protects children ages 14 to 17 in the workforce.
Wagner Act Made it legal to organize labor unions
National Labor Relations Board Protects workers who wish to be unionized and investigates charges of unfair labor practices.
Labor Unions represent workers in their dealings with employers.
Collective Bargaining a process through which unions negotiate with company management.
Strike occurs when workers stop working in an effort to force an employer to agree with the union's terms.
Labor contract a legal agreement signed by the company when an agreement is reached.
Unemployment Insurance Offers financial and other help to workers who lose their jobs.
Family and Medical Leave Act allows employers to grant workers up to 12 weeks leave a year for personal medical care or to care for a family member.
Discrimination favoring one person over another.
Civil Rights Act allowed government to prevent job discrimination.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) administers the Civil Rights Act and related laws
Age Discrimination Act passed to prohibit discrimination against people over 40
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 extended protection to those with physical or mental disabilities
American with Disabilities Act (ADA) give civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities.
Equal Pay Act workers doing the same job must receive the same wage.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Government agency that sets and enforces standards for safe and healthful working conditions
Paid Family Leave provides job-protected , paid time off for up to 12 weeks.
Minimum wage in NYS $16.50 an hour
