| Common Laws | Laws based on court decisions; When a court decides a case, that decision has the effect of a law; the decision sets a precedent for future cases to follow; aka Civil law |
| Tolerance | To put up with what other people say or think |
| Consensus | When a group collaborates and comes up with an agreement (a bit different from the term “majority.” |
| immigrant | A person from another country; someone who has moved from one country to another |
| alien | Another term for immigrant |
| naturalization | The process of immigrants becoming American citizens; they must apply, live here for 5 years legally, take a test, and swear oath to uphold the US Constitution |
| Constitution | A document that governs a country/state |
| Mixed salad | Analogy used to describe the US as a country of many different cultures and ethnicities |
| Immigration Act of 1990 | Law signed by George H.W. Bush that allowed immigrants with skills, talent, or money to legally come to the U.S. |
| Homeland Security | 15th Cabinet department created by George W. Bush after 9/11 to help advise on terrorism |
