Common Laws Laws based on court decisions; When a court decides a case, that decision has the effect of a law; the decision sets a precedent for future cases to follow; aka Civil law
Tolerance To put up with what other people say or think
Consensus When a group collaborates and comes up with an agreement (a bit different from the term “majority.”
immigrant A person from another country; someone who has moved from one country to another
alien Another term for immigrant
naturalization The process of immigrants becoming American citizens; they must apply, live here for 5 years legally, take a test, and swear oath to uphold the US Constitution
Constitution A document that governs a country/state
Mixed salad Analogy used to describe the US as a country of many different cultures and ethnicities
Immigration Act of 1990 Law signed by George H.W. Bush that allowed immigrants with skills, talent, or money to legally come to the U.S.
Homeland Security 15th Cabinet department created by George W. Bush after 9/11 to help advise on terrorism
