| Government | A body or group that rules a nation, state, or community |
| State/Nation | Technically, a state or nation is the same thing. They have gov’t, people, and borders. |
| Republic | A type of government where people elect their leaders; a representative democracy (United States) |
| totalitarian | A type of government with a dictatorship; rule by one person (North Korea) |
| Democracy | A government where people (citizens) have the power/voice |
| Representative democracy | A republic; a government ruled by its citizens through elections |
| Direct Democracy | A democracy where ALL citizens participate in government equally; There are no elections because all citizens have a voice and participate in all governing. |
| dictatorship | A government ruled by one; totalitarian (North Korea) |
| oligarchy | A government ruled by a few |
| theocracy | A government ruled by a religious leader (Ex: Pope and the Vatican City) |
