Expressions

Math 7 Expressions and Equations

TermDefinition
Expressions A math sentence containing at least one term.
Term Part of an expressions that is separated by addition or subtraction
Variable The unknown value in an expression. Denoted by a letter usually.
Coefficient The number that is being multiplied by the variable. Think the number in front.
Constant A term in an expression that contains no variables. Its just a number all alone.
Like Term Two are more terms that contain a common variable and exponent.
Exponent Repeated multiplication. Little guy on the shoulder of a number
Equivalent Expression When 2 expressions in simplest form are exactly the same, term for term.
Factored Form When you pull out the greatest common factor, and what is left in the expression is in simplest form.
Commutative Property In Addition or Multiplication, order does not matter. a+b = b+a
Associative Property In Addition or Multiplication, grouping doesn't matter. This is the one with Parentheses. (a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
Additive Identity Zero (0) a+0=a
Multiplicative Identity One (1) 1*a =a
Multiplicative Property of Zero a*0 = 0
Distributive Property The coefficient of an entire expression gets multiplied by each term in the expressions. a(b+c) = ab +ac
