Math 7 Expressions and Equations
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Expressions | A math sentence containing at least one term. |
Term | Part of an expressions that is separated by addition or subtraction |
Variable | The unknown value in an expression. Denoted by a letter usually. |
Coefficient | The number that is being multiplied by the variable. Think the number in front. |
Constant | A term in an expression that contains no variables. Its just a number all alone. |
Like Term | Two are more terms that contain a common variable and exponent. |
Exponent | Repeated multiplication. Little guy on the shoulder of a number |
Equivalent Expression | When 2 expressions in simplest form are exactly the same, term for term. |
Factored Form | When you pull out the greatest common factor, and what is left in the expression is in simplest form. |
Commutative Property | In Addition or Multiplication, order does not matter. a+b = b+a |
Associative Property | In Addition or Multiplication, grouping doesn't matter. This is the one with Parentheses. (a+b)+c=a+(b+c) |
Additive Identity | Zero (0) a+0=a |
Multiplicative Identity | One (1) 1*a =a |
Multiplicative Property of Zero | a*0 = 0 |
Distributive Property | The coefficient of an entire expression gets multiplied by each term in the expressions. a(b+c) = ab +ac |
