Planning and zoning

| Plannned unit development | A per planned development aimed at satisfying the various needs of the community |
| Master Plan | Used by plannners to guid them into allocating various zoning |
| Zoning | The act of local government to determine the use of certain properties |
| Zoning Ordinance | The execution of police power of local government |
| Buffer zone | Used to avoid overcrowding |
| Building Codes | Michigan residential code, which applies to the construction and remodeling of residential properties. |
| Setback Ordinance | Distance from edge of lot to where building is erected |
| Non Conforming use | The use of the land that does not match the zoning laws |
| Grandfather Clause | A provision in the law that allows the continuation of a non conforming use. |
| Zoning Variance | Allows the introduction of a non comforming use. |
