| panel | a distinct segment of the comic containing a combination of image and text in endless variety |
| frame | the lines and borders that contain the panels |
| splash page | when one panel takes up an entire page for effect |
| gutter | the space between framed panels |
| bleed | an image that extends to and/or beyond the edge of the page |
| foreground | the panel closest to the viewer |
| midground | allows centering of image by using natural resting place for vision |
| background | provides additional, subtextual information for the reader |
| zip-ribbons/motion lines | lines that indicate motion/action |
| graphic weight | a term that describes the way some images draw the eye more than others, creating a definite focus using color and shading in various ways |
| faces | can be portrayed as a face or iconic |
| iconic | representative of an idea or group of people |
| hands/feet | their positioning can be used to express what is happening in the story |
| captions | contain a variety of text elements |
| speech balloons | enclose dialogue and come from a specific speaker's mouth; vary in size, shape, and layout and can alternate to depict a conversation |
| external dialogue | speech between characters |
| internal dialogue | inclosed by a speech balloon that has a series of dots or bubbles going up to it |
| special effects lettering | draws attention to text; highlights and reinforces the impact of onomatopoeia |
| onomatopoeia | words such as "Bang!" or "Wow!" |
| scale | the size of an image, especially as compared to other images around it |
| point of view | the perspective the images seem to be seen from |
| juxtaposition | the deliberate placement of images next to each other for effect |
| negative space/white space/empty space | what is not the image |
| mood | emotional landscape of the work |
| tone | the writer's attitude about the subject matter |
| icon | a symbol or object representing a greater idea |
