7th Science Exam

7th Science Exam Mid-Term (Addie)

QuestionAnswer
Two airplanes are flying at the same speed and have the same mass. Airplane W is flying 50 m higher than Airplane X. Which statement best describes the energy of the two airplanes? The two airplanes have the same kinetic energy but different gravitational potential energies.
As gravitational energy decreases (goes down) the kinetic energy ______________. goes up
Why does the cue ball stop in the game of pool when it hits another ball and that ball moves? Because of energy transfer.
If we have an equal amount of steam, liquid water, and ice, then which one would have the most thermal energy? Steam because the molecules have the most kinetic energy.
Through which type of medium will sound travel through the fastest? Solid, the particles are extremely close together which means that the sound can easily be transferred between particles
What factors determine the amount of chemical energy a substance has? type of substance and mass
When an object emits sound ___________________. it loses some of its energy to the surroundings.
A loud drum noise fades faster than a more mellow sound. True
What is required for electrical energy to be transformed into other types of energy? A closed conducting circuit with an energy source
What is missing from the chemical reaction? 2Mg + O2 = 2Mg a. 02
What are examples that provide evidence that a chemical reaction took place? Bubbles, change in smell , temperature change, color change, change in properties (hardness, solubility, density, melt. Pt)
Is water boiling and changing into water vapor (a gas) an example of a physical change or chemical change? How do you know? Physical Change. The properties of the water do not change, it changes its state of matter.
What is an example of a change that would form a new substance? Burning toast
During a chemical reaction the atoms rearrange to form new _______________. substances
Give an example of a physical change A puddle that dries up in the rain
A student dissolves 5 grams of salt into 10 grams of water. What is the mass of the salt water? 15g
A substance is made up of _____________ type of material, whereas a mixture is made up of _______________ type of material. one more than one
As an object falls, what happens to its gravitational potential energy? it decreases
Give an example of something that represents energy being converted Converted: pool balls hitting one another
Give an example of something that represents energy NOT being converted Not Converted: a book sitting on a desk
What are the factors that influence the amount of elastic energy in an object? Compression, Stretching, Hardness
How do you find the density of an object? Mass/Volume (mass divided by volume)
What is solubility? If I determine that 10g of salt is not soluble in a large container oil, will 20g of salt be soluble in the same container? Explain. Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve. No, 20g will not dissolve either. Solubility is a property and does not change based upon amount.
What can scientist do to help find out whether two liquids are both the same substance? Smell the liquids to see if they are the same substance
What do we know is always true about conservation of matter? List just one. The mass of a system does not change during a chemical reaction
What are two ways to determine the amount of thermal energy of an object? Mass and Temperature
The properties of a substance (use salt as an example) such as hardness, density and melting point will __________________ even if the amount of the substance gets larger or smaller. stay the same
In the chemical reaction below identify the reactants and the products. aluminum + copper chloride à copper + aluminum chloride Reactants: aluminum + copper chloride Products: copper + aluminum chloride
Temperature change (hotter or colder), bubbles (evidence of a gas forming), color change and/or a precipitate (a new solid) are all evidence of a __________________ change. chemical
If two objects are moving at the same speed, but have different masses which one has more kinetic energy? T he object with the larger mass.
If you are holding a pendulum 3 ft off of the ground and then let it swing, what is happening to gravitational and kinetic energy? Gravitational energy is decreasing and kinetic energy is increasing.
If you bounce a basketball on the drive way eventually it comes to a stop? What explains why ball eventually stops? The ball transfers all of its energy to its surroundings.
If the molecules in an object are moving fast and have a a lot of kinetic energy, then what can we conclude about the temperature and thermal energy? The object has a high temperature and thermal energy.
If I place food coloring in two different cups of water (Cup A has hot water and Cup B has cold water) in which cup will the food coloring spread out faster? Why? Hot water. The molecules move faster in hot water than cold water and therefore collide more with the food coloring and move the food coloring particles around faster.
Why does a fully inflated balloon make a louder sound when popped than a partially inflated balloon? The fully inflated balloon has more elastic energy, therefore, more energy is converted to sound energy.
Which type of medium does sound travel through the fastest? Why? Solid because the particles are very close together.
What factors determine the amount of chemical energy in an object? Type of substance and Mass
What is the driving force behind all of our energy on earth? the sun
