| SUBSTANCE | matter that has a definite and uniform composition |
| MASS | a measurement that reflects the amount of matter |
| WEIGHT | measure not only of the amount of matter but also of the effect of Earth's gravitational pull on that matter |
| MODEL | visual, verbal, or mechanical explanation of experimental data |
| SCIENTIFIC METHOD | systematic approach used in scientific study |
| QUALITIVE DATA | information that descries color, odor, shape, or other physical characteristics |
| QUANTITIVE DATA | information that describes temp, pressure, volume, the quantity of a chemical formed, or how much of a chemical is used up in a reaction |
| HYPOTHESIS | tentative, testable statement or prediction about what has been observed |
| EXPERIMENT | set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis |
| INDEPENDENT VARIABLE | variable you plan to change |
| DEPENDENT VARIABLE | value changes in response to a change of the independent variable |
| CONTROL | standard for comparison |
| CONCLUSION | judgment based on the information obtained |
| THEORY | explanation of a natural phenomenon based on many observations and investigations over time |
| SCIENTIFIC LAW | relationship in nature that's supported b many experiments |
| PURE RESEARCH | something that a scientist does to gain knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself |
| APPLIED RESEARCH | research undertaken to solve a specific problem |
