Comma Rules

TermDefinition
Comma/FANBOYS Rule Place a comma and a FANBOYS conjunction between two complete sentences.
Intro Phrase Rule Commas com after a intro word/phrase/clause. Remeber the AWUBIS words
Nonessential Set Off Rule Breaks apart sentences and sets off nonessential clauses/phrases/words.
Essential Set Off Rule DO NOT use commas to set off an essential clause/word/phrase. Example: Relative clauses (clauses beginning with 'that')
List Rule Use commas between 3 or more words making up a list. Example: Words used to describe water include: clear, cold, and WET.
Adjective Rule Use commas between 2 or more adjectives
Pause/Shift Rule Use commas to indicate a distinct pause. Example: Jeff was Jeff, not Geoff.
Referencing phrase Rule Use commas to set off phrases that refer to other parts of the sentences. Example: Todd ate his sandwich, finally sated.
Date Rule Use commas to set off geographical names, terms in dates, etc.
Confusion Rule Use commas to avoid confusion. (Oxford commas).
Quotation Rule Use commas around dialogue. I said, "I HATE MEMES"
