Naming Acids

QuestionAnswer
Binary Acid consists of a compound that contains hydrogen and one other element
How do you name a binary acid? hydro(root word of second element) ic acid
Oxyacids compounds that contain hydrogen and a polyatomic ion that contains oxygen
How do you name a oxyacid with the suffix -ate If the polyatomic ion ends in -ate it is replaced with the suffix -ic
What do you not do when naming oxyacids? DO NOT USE A PREFIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you name a oxyacid with the suffix -ite? If the polyatomic ion ends in -ite it is replaced with the suffix -ous
Compared with acids that have the suffix -ic, acids that have the suffix -ous contain less oxygen
