Physics Chapter 2
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atomic Mass- | Equals the sum of protons and neutrons in an atom |
| Z#- | Atomic # of protons and electrons |
| Octet Rule- | Always 8 eb in the outter shell |
| What charge is the nucleus? | Positive |
| What charge is the electrons? | Negative |
| What charge is the neutron? | Neutral |
| What charge is the protons? | Positive |
| What is eB measured in? | KeV |
| T or F; If an atom gains or loses an electron it will become ionized? | True |
| What charge is a Anion? | Negative |
| What charge is a Cation? | Positive |
| Covalent Bonds- | Where valence electrons are shared |
| Ionic Bonbs- | Valence electrons are transferred and since atoms lose electrons, they become ionized |
| Radioactivity- | The emission of particles and energy in order to become stable |
| Beta emission- | An electron in the nucleus is ejected and leaves the atom. A neutron converts to a proton. |
| Alpha emission- | More invasive, the alpha particle consists of 2 neutrons bound together. |
| Radioactive half life- | The time required for the quantity of radioactivity to be reduced by half of the original. |
| What are the 2 types of ionizing radiation? | Particulate and Electromagnetic |
| What are the 2 types of Particulate radiation? | Alpha & Beta |
| What is a photon? | X-ray |
| What are x-rays and gamma rays a form of? | Electromagnetic radiation |
| Isotope- | Atoms that have the same Z number but different atomic numbers. Meaning they have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. |
| Isobar- | Atoms that have a different number of protons and a different number of neutrons but same number of nucleons. |
| Isotone- | Atoms that have the same number of neutrons but different number of protons. |
| Isomer- | Atoms that have the same Z number and the same atomic mass number but exist at different energy states due to nucleon arrangement. |
| Out of Alpha, Beta, and regular photons which one is least ionizing? | Photons (X-rays) |
| AMU- | Atomic Mass Units |
| What is the amount of AMU of a alpha particle? | 4 AMU |
| How fast does Electromagnetic radiation(EM) travel? | 3 x 10^8 m/s |
| Where are gamma rays emitted from? and what are they usually associated with? | Nucleus of a radioisotope and usually associated with alpha and beta emission. |
| Atomic # - Z# = | # of neutrons |
