Structure and Style

TermDefinition
Simple Sentence Like the term says, it is a simple, easy to understand sentence that is usually short and to the point. COntains a subject and a predicate with little else around it.
PARADOX A sentence that at its initial reading seems contradictory but when studied closely has a truth to it.
Anaphora phrases that begin with the same exact clause and occur over many sentences
Parallelism when small words are switched out, but the main clause remains similar, especially in grammatical structure and is contained within one sentence.
Loose Sentence Unravels the main idea at the beginning of a sentence, the remaining clauses or phrases are there to provide additional information but are not essential to understanding the main idea.
Periodic sentences A sentence begins with facts or descriptions, but what the sentence starts with is to not the main ideas because the main idea of the sentence is near the end.
Asyndeton means "Without togetherness"; to bring things together without using connective words
polysyndeton To bring many ideas together through an overabundant use of connective words.
Storytelling The literal use of a story or stories being told within a movie or book.
Flashback Alongside storytelling, in a story a sudden retelling or recounting memory
MEDIA RES A story that starts "in the middle" of the action without setup of exposition
Flashforward A story that moves past the present moment to reveal a moment that will occur later in the story
Juxtaposition Placement of scenes, situations or scenarios that are to be compared to the contrasting effects
CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER The story is told and moves along as time passes. From page to page, chapter to chapter, days and weeks go by without interruption or change.
Parallel Plot Within a movie or book, multiple storylines are being played out, often time slowly converging towards one another.
