Geo Skills. 1. Which railroad connected Los Angeles to New Orleans? 2. Which railroads would a traveler use from St. Louis to Virginia City? 1. The Southern Pacific Railroad. 2. He would use the Kansas Pacific Railroad, the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad.
Section Questions. Do # 2-6.
2. Describe the method used by railroad barons to drive smaller companies out of business. 2. The Barons, would either buy the railroads from the company or drive them away.
3. How did the railroads pave the way for the expansion of industry in the West? They transported the goods to and from the markets and factories. It helped the iron mining and processing industries grow. George Westinghouse devised air brakes that help the trains stop better, so its safer for traveling.
3. Continued. The center for flour milling over time changed from Ohio, to Minneapolis, and then to Kansas City. In New York, it was the central point for manufacturing agricultural equipment. It changed to Illinois and WIsconsin.
4. Do you think the Federal Government should have intervened to regulate the unfair practice of railroad barons? Why or why not? 4. If the Federal Government regulated the practice of railroad barons, then some railroads that were created would've not existed. The Barons created some railroads that connected certain places.
5. Give four developments in technology that improved railroad transportation. 1. George Westinghouse, created air brakes, to help the trains stop better and it made traveling safer. 2. Eli H. Janney, created Janney car couplers that helped workers to link cars.
5. Continued. 3. Gustavus Swift, made the refrigerated cars, making it easier to ship meat over long distances. 4. George M. Pullman developed the Pullman sleeping car, a luxury railway car with seats the unfolded into beds for overnight trips.
6. Study the map of the major western railroads that appears on page 558. Through what states did the Great Northern Railroad pass? Through what cities in Montana did Railroads pass? 1. It went through Portland and Duluth. 2. Bozeman, Helena and Butte.
Skillbuilder on page 560. Answer questions 1-3. 1. Describe how US time changes as you move from east to west. 2. What US time zone lies farthest west? 3. If it is 6:00pm in Washington, D.C., what time is it in San Diego, CLifornia. 1. If you start in North Carolina, as you go farther west, the time changes. It goes back an hour, so if it was 6:00pm in West Virginia, in Wyoming it is 4:00pm. 2. 1:00pm 3. In San Diego, it is 3:00pm
