| Onomatopoeia | use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning ex: buzz |
| Refrain | repeated phrase, line, or group of lines ex: the chorus in music |
| Rhyme | repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds following them, in words that are close together in a poem ex: crumble and tumble |
| End rhyme | rhyming of the last words at the end of two or more lines of poetry |
| Internal rhyme | occurs within lines of poetry ex: into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning |
| Meter | rhythmic pattern of a poem, determined by the sequence of stressed (accented) and unstressed (unaccented) syllables in a line of poetry |
| Scanning | marking the pattern of meter in a line of poetry |
| Dialect | a way of speaking that is characteristic of a particular region or of a particular group of people ex: y'all from Southern dialect |
| Connotation | the meaning, association, or emotion that a word suggests ex: we are poor means more than not having money |
| Denotation | the literal, dictionary definition of a word |
| Figure of Speech | word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of another and is not meant to be understood as literally true |
| Simile | comparison between two unlike things using like or as ex: moths stream toward lights like litter in the wind |
| Metaphor | comparison between unlike things in which one thing becomes another thing ex: I am a lonely, wandering cloud |
| Personification | special type of metaphor in which a non-human thing or quality is talked about as if it were human ex: the deer proudly marched through the talking meadow |
| Imagery | language that appeals to the senses - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell |
| Tone | the attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character ex: serious, humorous, sarcastic, sad |
| Ballad | song-like poem that tells a story, often dealing with adventure and romance |
| Free Verse | poetry without a regular meter or a rhyme scheme |
| Stanza | a group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a unit ex: paragraph of poetry |
| Narrative poem | lengthy poem that tells a story |
| Lyric poem | highly musical verse that expresses the observations and feelings of a single speaker |
