The Number System
Practice vocabulary for the system of rational numbers.
| Term | Definition |

| absolute value | the distance a number is from zero on a number line |
| credit | an amount that indicates an addition (or deposit) to a bank account |
| debit | an amount that indicates a subtraction (or withdrawal) from a bank account |
| integers | the set of numbers that includes zero, the counting numbers, and their opposites |
| negative integers | the opposites of the positive integers; located to the left of zero on a number line |
| opposites | a pair of numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line but in opposite directions |
| positive integers | the set of counting numbers starting with 1; located to the right of zero on a number line |
| rational number | a number that can be expressed as a ratio (fraction); includes integers, fractions, repeating & terminating decimals |
| whole numbers | the set of numbers that includes all natural counting numbers and zero |
| magnitude | the size of something; also a synonym for absolute value |
