The Number System

Practice vocabulary for the system of rational numbers.

TermDefinition
absolute value the distance a number is from zero on a number line
credit an amount that indicates an addition (or deposit) to a bank account
debit an amount that indicates a subtraction (or withdrawal) from a bank account
integers the set of numbers that includes zero, the counting numbers, and their opposites
negative integers the opposites of the positive integers; located to the left of zero on a number line
opposites a pair of numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line but in opposite directions
positive integers the set of counting numbers starting with 1; located to the right of zero on a number line
rational number a number that can be expressed as a ratio (fraction); includes integers, fractions, repeating & terminating decimals
whole numbers the set of numbers that includes all natural counting numbers and zero
magnitude the size of something; also a synonym for absolute value
