Ocean floor features

| Continental shelf | the area of seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean. The continental shelf is geologically part of the continental crust. |
| Mid-Ocean ridge | Area in which mountains form when tectonic plates pull apart magma fills in the space to form new ocean crust. |
| Continental slope | Begins at the edge of the continental shelf and continues down to the flattest part of the ocean floor |
| Abyssal plain | The broad flat part of the ocean floor |
| Ocean trench | Long, narrow crack in the ocean floor formed when one tectonic plate is forced underneath another |
| Seamount | Volcanic mountain formed in the ocean |
| Continental rise | The gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the continental slope and the abyssal plain |
| Rift Valley | As mountains build up this forms between them in the rift zone |
