Ocean floor features

QuestionAnswer
Continental shelf the area of seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean. The continental shelf is geologically part of the continental crust.
Mid-Ocean ridge Area in which mountains form when tectonic plates pull apart magma fills in the space to form new ocean crust.
Continental slope Begins at the edge of the continental shelf and continues down to the flattest part of the ocean floor
Abyssal plain The broad flat part of the ocean floor
Ocean trench Long, narrow crack in the ocean floor formed when one tectonic plate is forced underneath another
Seamount Volcanic mountain formed in the ocean
Continental rise The gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the continental slope and the abyssal plain
Rift Valley As mountains build up this forms between them in the rift zone
