Ch 1.2 Classifying Matter

TermDefinition
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical of physical means.
Atom The basic particle from which all elements are made.
Chemical Bond The force of attraction that holds two atoms together.
Molecule A neutral group that is composed of molecules.
Compound A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a specific portion, or proportion.
Chemical Formula Symbols that show the elements in a compound and the ratio of atoms.
Mixture Two or more substances that are together in the same place but their atoms are not chemically bonded.
