| Scatterplot | A chart that shows the relationship between two quantitative variables measured on the same cases and plotted as (x,y). |
| Positive Direction | As one variable increases, the other increases |
| Negative Direction | As one variable increases, the other decreases |
| Form | Patterns we see in scatter plot that include linear, curved, etc |
| Strength | Describing how strong an association is by describing the amount of scatter |
| Outlier | A point that does not fit the overall pattern seen in the scatterplot |
| Response Variable | y-value |
| Explanatory Variable | x-value |
| Correlation Coefficient | The numerical measure of direction and strength of a linear association |
| Lurking Variable | A variable other than x or y that simultaneously affects both variables, accounting for the correlation between the two |
