Scatterplot A chart that shows the relationship between two quantitative variables measured on the same cases and plotted as (x,y).
Positive Direction As one variable increases, the other increases
Negative Direction As one variable increases, the other decreases
Form Patterns we see in scatter plot that include linear, curved, etc
Strength Describing how strong an association is by describing the amount of scatter
Outlier A point that does not fit the overall pattern seen in the scatterplot
Response Variable y-value
Explanatory Variable x-value
Correlation Coefficient The numerical measure of direction and strength of a linear association
Lurking Variable A variable other than x or y that simultaneously affects both variables, accounting for the correlation between the two
